The origin of May Day
May 1st International Labor Day, also known as "May 1st", falls on May 1st every year. This festival originated from the workers' strike in Chicago, USA. On May 1, 1886 in Chicago for more than two hundred and sixteen thousand workers held the big strike shall institute an eight-hour working day system, after a bloody arduous struggle, they finally won a victory. To commemorate this great workers' movement, in July 1889, the second international announced on May 1st each year as international labor day. This decision immediately received positive responses from workers all over the world. On May 1, 1890, the working class of Euro-American took to the streets, held grand demonstrations and rallies, fought for the legal rights and interests. Since then, on this day, working people all over the world have to gather and parade to celebrate.
Establishment of Chinese Labor Day
The Labor Day of the Chinese people can be traced back to 1918. At that time, some revolutionary intellectuals in China distributed leaflets introducing Labor Day to the masses in Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Hankou. On May 1, 1920, workers from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Jiujiang, Tangshan and other industrial cities came to the streets in a mighty way and held large-scale parades and rallies. After the founding of New China in December 1949, the Central People's Government designated May 1 as the statutory Labor Day. On May 1, 1950, the Chinese people celebrated the first Labor Day after the founding of the People's Republic of China.
